Authorities in Melbourne have located the crash site after a search for the missing plane was launched this morning.
The missing helicopter was traveling in a convoy with another helicopter when it disappeared around 09:30 Australian Eastern Standard Time (11:30 GMT), Victoria Police said.
9News reported that the search was still ongoing until 11:30 am, with low clouds making search conditions difficult.
State Emergency Service volunteers, police, paramedics and Forest Fire Management have set up a staging point on the mountain, located an hour north of Melbourne.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said they were gathering more information.
It is not known whether smoke from the recent bushfires may have contributed to the helicopter crash.
In an update to 6News, Victoria Police confirmed: “Two helicopters were traveling north in convoy from Melbourne’s CBD over Mount Disappointment when one aircraft disappeared just after 09:30.
“At this stage the second helicopter has not been found.”
Ambulance Victoria released a statement saying: “Crews headed to the scene and an air ambulance has been dispatched.
