Cawthorn, who was elected in 2020 as the youngest person to serve in Congress at the age of 26, made the comments while appearing on John Lovell’s Warrior Poet podcast. The North Carolina representative, who is running for re-election in November, appeared on the podcast in her wheelchair wearing a camouflaged baseball cap and a t-shirt that showed her tattoos.

When asked by Mr Lovell about whether the corruption in the Netflix series House of Cards was also seen in Washington, Mr Cawthorn said: “The sexual perversion that’s going on in Washington, I mean, being the kind of young man in Washington where the average is maybe 60 or 70. , I see all these people, many of whom I have respected throughout my life, I have always paid attention to politics.

“Then suddenly you’re invited… ‘We’re having a sexual get-together in one of our houses, you have to come’.

“What did you just ask me to come to? And then you realized they were asking you to come to the orgy.

“Or

the fact that some people are leading the movement to try and get rid of addiction in our country, and then you see them taking cocaine right in front of you. And it’s like, this is wild.”

Cawthorn’s appearance on the Warrior Poet podcast, which has more than 1.2 million subscribers, has been viewed more than 165,000 times on YouTube and liked by 16,000 users on the video-sharing platform.

The

GOP congressman’s comments have also sparked anger among Republicans.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy promised to speak to Cawthorn about the allegations made, the California congressman’s office has confirmed.

Meghan McCain was also quick to question Cawthorn’s account.

“But if Cawthorn is deeply concerned and disgusted by this behavior, then he should be the first to reveal the people behind it.”

However, this isn’t the first time Cawthorn has found himself in hot water.

GOP lawmakers described Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a “thug” and even claimed his government in Kyiv was “very evil”.

His comments, made after Vladimir Putin’s invasion of the former Soviet state, were widely condemned by his Republican counterparts.
