Even though the rain did not stop, the participants of the Semarang Night carnival, who were dressed in colorful costumes, continued the convoy with enthusiasm, including myself and all the spectators who remained. As the night progresses, the audience grows even more along the carnival route.
Opened directly by the mayor of Semarang, Hendrar Prihardi, the Semarang Night Carnival took place in front of the Bledug Church in the old city of Semarang.
The theme raised at the 2016 Semarang Night Carnival is “Fantasi Warak Ngendhog”. The costumes displayed are the Tongue of Warak, Gogo Warak, Horn of Warak, Scales of Warak, and Harmoni of Warak.
FYi, Warak Ngendhog is a fantasy animal that characterizes the city of Semarang, Central Java.
“Warak ngendhok is a symbol of acculturation in the city of Semarang. The head of the dragon symbolizes the Chinese ethnicity, the body of the buraq symbolizes the Arabs, and the leg of the goat symbolizes Java,” explained the mayor of Semarang at the opening of his speech.
Thousands of people have packed the route for about one kilometer in the Old City area of Semarang, where the cultural performances are held which are enlivened by various unique costumes.
Visitors and participants of the 2016 SNC had tossed around looking for shelter when it suddenly rained. The musicians who accompany the carnival music live live panic too.
