Low Motivation. Thinking about innovation will distract employees from their daily tasks is one of the reasons why management does not support employees to innovate. Organizations need to understand that internal innovation only occurs when employees have the freedom and courage to try new ideas and take risks which this process would not have happened without the support of its leaders. In addition, employees also need the right motivation, including training, mentoring, or incentives.
Relying on One Group. Not a few organizations believe that innovation carried out by a functional group such as the product development department is the best, even though this is a barrier to innovation in the company. Why? Because every department and every individual in the organization has a unique perspective on an issue. Those who fail to mobilize these competent resources run the risk of missing out on successful innovations.
Organizational culture. Corporate culture is often discussed, but what does it mean? Corporate culture has a big contribution to innovation in the company, it can support but also can hinder. For example, if the culture in your company is too bureaucratic and political then innovation will be hampered. Lack of Follow Up. Citing CIOs, a study by Imaginatik found that one of the biggest threats to innovation within companies is a lack of follow-through. In the study, 34 percent of respondents reported lack of follow-up as one of their biggest problems. Generating innovative ideas is sometimes the easy part, but implementing those ideas consistently is not an easy job.
Customer Relations. Feedback from customers is needed to build a successful innovation. Customer empathy is something that companies must have in order to understand customer wants and needs so that they are able to anticipate changing trends in the future. However, many companies still ignore this.
Successful Innovation Strategy
Jeanne Liedtka, Professor at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business in her article on HBR states that to be successful the innovation process must meet the following three things:
Excellent solution. Defining a problem conventionally will lead to a conventional solution. Therefore, the team had to find more original ideas. The solution would also be much better if it included criteria from the user. In this case, market research can help companies understand these criteria.
Lower risk and cost. Uncertainty is unavoidable in innovation. That’s why innovators often build a variety of portfolio options. This drives a lot of ideas that can undermine focus and resources. Here the innovator must be observant to make judgments and release some ideas.
Employee recruitment. An innovation will not succeed unless the employees in the company support it. One way to get support is to involve them in the idea generation process. But keep in mind that the involvement of many people with different perspectives can create chaos and incoherence.

In Jeanne’s article, Kaaren Hanson, Facebook’s Director of product design says: “Whenever you try to change people’s behavior, you have to start with a lot of structure, so they don’t have to think. A lot of the work we do is habit, and it’s hard to change the habit, but having very clear guidelines can help us.”
The five steps in Design Thinking is an organized process that will help us explore a problem in a creative way. As we know, not a few of us are very afraid of making mistakes, so the focus is on preventing mistakes from happening rather than taking advantage of the opportunities that exist. From this we can see that the psychological factor of security greatly influences a person’s actions in innovating.
