Mother probably already knows, that the National Examination has been abolished since last year. This is in accordance with the Circular of the Minister of Education and Culture Number 1 of 2021. In it, there is a decision to abolish the National Examination and the equivalence test regarding the increasing spread of Covid-19.
Citing the official website of the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture, the reasons for the abolition of the National Examination are first, the National Examination contains more items that measure low-level thinking competencies. This is not in line with the goal of education which is to develop higher-order thinking skills and other competencies that are more relevant to the 21st Century, as reflected in the 2013 Curriculum.
Second, the National Examination does not encourage teachers to use effective teaching methods to develop higher-order thinking skills. The substitute competency assessment for the National Examination will be designed to provide a stronger impetus towards innovative teaching and oriented to the development of reasoning, not memorization.
Third, the National Examination is less than optimal as a tool to improve the quality of education nationally. Because it is held at the end of the level, the results of the National Examination cannot be used to identify students’ learning needs and provide assistance according to those needs.
So, it is necessary to take responsive steps that prioritize the safety and health of students, educators, and education staff. With the abolition of the National Examination and the equivalence exam in 2021, the National Examination and the equivalence exam will not be a requirement for graduation or selection to enter a higher education level.
Meanwhile, the exams held by the education unit (school exams) as a determinant of student graduation can be carried out in the form of portfolios, assignments, offline or online tests, and/or other forms of assessment activities determined by the education unit.
